Today I am going to talk about the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. There are NO SPOILERS in this review. First off let me start by saying that if you have not yet read this book you need to put down whatever you are doing at this moment and get to it because this book is a good and fast read. I read Divergent when it first came out in 2011 before any other teenage girl in my school got their hands on it and as soon as I finished I recommended the book to everyone but of course people didn’t start to hop on the bandwagon until this year/ late last year when the trailer was released. Although I don’t think that Veronica Roth is an amazing writer the plot to this trilogy is brilliant and I think no one really pays attention to the brilliant part. Like most popular books Divergent is a dystopian fiction but in a time of dystopian fiction Divergent is like no other. In the book divergent the society is split into five factions Erudite, Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, and Amity. If you take a close look at each faction name you will find a root word that you are familiar with which can help you guess the characteristics one must have to be in each faction. To sum it up erudite are the brainiacs Abnegations are the selfless people Dauntless are the fearless Candor the truthful and Amity the peaceful. In this society you are first born into one of these factions but when you come of age you take a test to determine which faction you truly belong in. Another important thing in this society is that you can only be one thing meaning you can only be fearless not fearless and truthful or truthful and selfless your brain doesn’t work like that unless you are a divergent thinker meaning you can be fearless truthful, and selfless . After you take your faction test you have to go through an initiation to prove you belong in the faction and if you fail that then you are faction less. When I first read this book the first thing that the plot reminded me of was social psychology. Everyone is trying to fit in to a place and the factions are your social roles so you must follow the characteristics of that role and you always chose your” faction over blood” which is a strong quote to me because it just shows how important grouping is in this dystopian society if you’re not in a faction then you fail much like if you don’t conform in the real world then you’re usually an outsider or you are divergent. Another thing the book reminded me of was nature vs. nurture as seen in the book just because you grow up a certain way doesn’t mean that is how you are going to turn out. In the book Tris prior’s brother ends up choosing erudite when all his life he grew up in an Abnegation home that is an example of nature over nurture while other kids who grew up in Dauntless ended up being in dauntless after their initiation which would be Nurture over nature or maybe both. Although Tris chose Dauntless sometimes her actions are proved to be Abnegation. That’s how I see the book Divergent and maybe you wont see it this way or social psych is all you will think about after reading this post either way I hope you enjoyed! 😀
